Background to specification
Starting in early 2011, Clowes Developments’ construction of Marks & Spencer’s huge new distribution centre at Castle Donington near Derby is an impressive project on any scale – with leading design features down to the ground. The distribution centre is expected to come on stream in 2012 and employ hundreds of people.
The project also points to construction of a rail terminal in Castle Donington, as M&S intends to bring in much of the stock by rail as part of its plan to make its operation as environmentally friendly as possible.
In line with M&S environmental criteria for new developments, the 1 million sq ft scheme on the site of the former Castle Donington power station will be carbon neutral and an “exemplar project” for the UK Green Building Council.
Not only are its roofs designed to capture rain to reduce water consumption and allow solar panels to be fitted, but the building was to include recycled and recyclable materials such as the Tubosider stormwater attenuation tanks running its perimeter. The two 1.2 km long connected tanks provide no less than 4400 m³ (over 155,000 ft³) of water storage.
Solution and benefits
The choice of Tubosider greatly pleased contractors Winvic Construction, widely known as the UK’s leading ‘shed’ specialist and highly prominent in the industrial, distribution and commercial sectors. Tubosider’s level of service and its system’s easy installation made the whole operation an actual pleasure, says Winvic senior engineer Dan Barker.
“It’s so much easier dealing with a supplier who can answer technical queries and accommodate any late changes in its stride. The design, manufacture and delivery were spot on – and they made sure we were kept informed throughout. Installation, too, was such an easy job, though Tubosider was also on hand to help. And the system itself is perfectly designed for inspection and maintenance.”
The large-bore galvanised and corrugated steel tanks are not only load-bearing, but fitted with access shafts and internal ladders at suitable intervals. Taken with its service, including liaison with project engineers BWB Consulting, it’s a cut above its competitors, concludes Dan Barker. “This is the first time we have used Tubosider, but we will have no hesitation in recommending them for further projects.”
