As contractors for the major new build and refurbishment project at Skegness Academy, Balfour Beatty have again been working with Tubosider to solve a very live issue. 2012 sees the critical second phase of the £21 million project, in which effective stormwater attenuation has to be installed for the buildings and sports facilities. However, not only would the system have to allow ongoing access between academy and training areas, but it would have to accommodate existing services including an electric cable across the designated location of the dig.
Balfour Beatty’s agent Rik Dickson faced two alternatives – either install a clutch of crate systems on either side of the cable, or see if a single Twinstore tank could be designed to give sufficient capacity on the one side.
Some creative thinking between Rik and Tubosider’s design team led to a 1400mm diameter tank shaped in a right-angled triangle composed of three legs of almost 53, 43 and 33 meters in length.
Using the Twinstore system of balancing any water held between the tank itself and the surrounding membrane-lined granular fill did more than dramatically reduce the area of dig.
Balfour Beatty also particularly benefited from the speed of installation as they work to complete phase two by October 2012. Time and efficiency is of the essence, and at the height of the building works, around 120 people have been working on site. The total project will see the buildings and facilities at Skegness Academy developed to match the recently completed Nottingham Academy, which is also sponsored by the Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust.
All work is due to be completed by August 2013. One exciting new feature of the development scheme is a 300-seat theatre space which will be available for community use. Outside, the grounds are set to feature a nature trail, pond and bat and bird boxes. Other facilities will include a learning resource centre with access to over 80 work stations and net books, six science laboratories, six new ICT suites, refurbished classrooms with full ICT access, refurbished sports facilities, a new bistro and dining area, and new social areas.
